Greek government spokeswoman says a Sept 20 election date is still feasible

ATHENS, Greece – The Greek government says it’s still aiming for a Sept. 20 election date after the prime minister resigned because of a rebellion in his party over the terms of the country’s new bailout deal.

Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili told Greek state TV ERT on Sunday that “as things stand now, Sept. 20 is a feasible election date.”

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned Thursday. Opposition leader Evangelos Meimarakis, who was asked to form a government, is expected to inform Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos Monday that he has failed.

Panayotis Lafazanis, former minister and leader of Popular Unity party, will be handed a mandate. If he also fails, a national unity government is possible and if that doesn’t work, Parliament will be dissolved and a caretaker administration sworn in.
