Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – The Oakland Athletics officially released designated hitter Adam Dunn Thursday in order to clear a spot on the team’s 40-man roster.
The move was purely procedural, as Dunn was set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the postseason and had previously stated that he plans to retire.
Dunn, whose 462 career home runs are tied for 35th place on MLB’s all-time list, hit .212 with two homers and 10 RBI in 25 games with the A’s after being acquired in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. The 34-year-old slugger did not play in Oakland’s 9-8, 12-inning loss to Kansas City in the American League wild card Game.
The A’s needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster after claiming pitcher Jorge De Leon off waivers from Houston.
De Leon, 27, recorded an 0-1 record with a 5.19 ERA over 19 relief appearances with the Astros over the past two seasons.
