Guru Nanak Jayanti: Know About History, Significance, Celebrations, Wishes

Guru Nanak Jayanti or Prakash Parv, is celebrated worldwide, every year on Kartik Purnima,  to commemorate the birth of the first guru and founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev. Prabhat Pheri and Nagar Kirtan are performed by the followers of Sikhism and offered handkerchiefs on Guru Nanak Jayanti’s morning. In Gurudwaras they donate and feed the needy. Guru Nanak Jayanti, known as Guru Parv and Gurpurab, is the Guru Festival For those who follow the Sikh religion, gurpurab is the most important day.

History Of Guru Nanak Jayanti:

In 1469, in Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan, the current Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born (formerly known as the village of Rai-Bhoi-Ki Talvandi). Young Nanak showed several times that he was blessed by the power of God. He took several spiritual travels much later in his life and authored 974 songs that may be found in the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book). Over time, he encouraged many to practise compassion and created a vital basis for his disciples. He was therefore regarded as Sikhism’s founder. This legacy of Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti, bequeathed centuries ago, was honoured for Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Significance Of Guru Nanak Jayanti:

The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, was a preacher of peace and harmony, and in the sacred words, called Guru Granth Sahib his teachings are preserved. Around 551 years ago at a town near Lahore, Pakistan, the first Sikh Guru was born on this day. Nankana Sahib is the location of his birth. Fifteen days before his birthday the celebration of Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav began. It generally begins with Prabhat Pheris — a procession early in the morning that begins at the Gurudwaras and goes about places singing hymns.

Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations

Akhand Path is held in all the Gurdwaras two days before the anniversary of their birth. A day later a parade called Nagar Kirtan is organised before Guru Nanak Jayanti. The parade with the Sikh flag is headed by people, known as Guru Granth Sahib’s Nishan Sahib and Guru Palanquin.

The celebrations start early in the morning on the day of the Gurpurab and are known as Amrit Vela. The day begins with the morning singing, followed by the guru’s praises with Katha and Kirtans. The Gurudwaras would then prepare a special communal luncheon called ‘Langar.’

Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations:

The festivities of Guru Nanak Jayanti are a wonderful combination of devotion and enthusiasm. Many events, performances and processions constitute a major component of the event, some beginning days prior to the main day.

One of these is the Guru Granth Sahib, also named Akhand Path,’ 48 hours of continuous reading. It starts in nearly all of the Gurudwaras two days before the festival.

Nagar Kirtan is a parade led by the five adored, or the Panj Pyare, one day before the birthday. This procession is an experience when participants chant beautiful songs, bearing the Guru Granth Sahib and the Nishan Sahib palanquins (Sikh flag).

Prabhat Pheri

With Gakta performances and the high-class music, the atmosphere is boosted tenfold. It’s a very good experience, as we mentioned.

The Jayanti starts from the singing, at 3:00 to 6:00, in the morning hymns (Asa-Ki-Vaar), from the readings (Katha) to the hymns (Kirtan) at the Amrit Vela. Another procession in the morning is also carried through the neighbourhood, named Prabhat Pheri, to celebrate the beginning of the good day.

Shortly after the Prabhat Pheris, the lunches of community Langars are held. These free lunches embrace everyone regardless of status, caste, faith and gender.
